Dandruff is a common condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear. Usually this is further followed by itching. If you get the idea of how to get rid of dandruff at the comfort of your home then it will be a matter of time to implement it and use.

It is a common problem in both Men and Women. This is a chronic skin condition and around half of the population (50%) struggles with dandruff during their life.

In majority of cases, dandruff can be cured without any medical attention (by just using cosmetic products). But sometimes flaking and itching scalp is actually a medical condition, such as seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis.

Conceptually, dandruff is a dander and represents nothing more than physiologic scaling. Hence, it is believed that physiological scaling process requires more of cosmetic management. The response to treatment is commonly swift, but transient. On the contrary, seborrhoeic dermatitis is obviously more inflammatory in nature extending outside the limit of the scalp surface.

Use of inappropriate hair products and other medical conditions can worsen the symptoms.

Causes of Dandruff

There are many external and internal factors that can cause dandruff although the accurate reason of why dandruff occurs is still not known.

Here are the most common reasons that can lead to the development of dandruff on your scalp-

causes of dandruff

  • Replacement of old skin cells on scalp with new ones is a constant process. If shedding of old cells is faster than the creation of new ones than this causes dandruff.
  • Some people are sensitive enough with the fungus called Malassezia that naturally exists on scalp. This sensitivity can lead to the extra growth of skin cells on scalp which causes dandruff.
  • Genetic Factors.
  • Irregular or uncommon hair comb or hair brushing.
  • Frequent use of shampoo causes scalp irritation which leads to dandruff.
  • Certain skin conditions like psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis..
  • Fungal infection like scalp ringworm.
  • Certain medical conditions or people who are recovering from certain medical conditions can be more prone to dandruff.
  • High stress level affects the immune system which can cause itching and skin dryness.
  • Weak immune system reduces the body’s ability to fight with fungal infections and skin related diseases.

A study with 82 people who had seborrheic dermatitis, one of the main cause of dandruff, showed that the dermatitis disease is often preceded by a stressful event.

  1. Hello Neha!

As a male, I get often problems with dandruff too, except for the cases (not rare) when I literally shave my head and hair has to grow from zero again. But as it starts to grow in its millimeters, many tiny “parts” start to appear again!

Maybe in my case the dandruff would be handled well enough if I took more care of my scalp skin in the daily life (not just when shaving). I am quite a lazy man from this point of view.

Anyway, thanks for putting at our disposition this set of methods to fight against dandruff. Regular washing and shampoos are among the most affordable ways for it. And going temporary bald is the harsh solution :).

    Best regards, Peter
